WHY do you Ride?
When I was nine I got my first road bike,
and with every ride I traveled, I used
inspiration as a tool to help me ride
stronger, faster, and longer.
I rode for the pure joy of exploration,
adventure, and self-learning.
(Granted, I didn't know it at the time;)
Sometimes I road twice a day. Sometimes
I road ALL DAY from town to town.
I always rode with thoughts in my head to
inspire and propel me forward.
Sometimes it was music. Sometimes the
thought of a girl that I liked at school.
Sometimes I rode to blow off steam or to
explore a new world to make mine seem a
little bit bigger.
Yes, even the thought of being the next
Greg LeMond headed into Paris as I raced
around town with a juke-box strapped to my
back playing Pink Floyd or Reo Speedwagon.
(Man...it's been a while!)
The point is, that at that tender age, almost
everything we did was inspired or motivated
by something special or magical.
As adults, it's easy to lose that quality
about our cycling as many of us forget
'WHY WE RIDE'.
Some of us ride for fitness. Some for
stress relief. Some to get away from work.
Some of us love to race and compete.
Others just like to roll-on with friends
and chat the weekly events on a Sunday
morning club ride.
No matter 'why you ride', I
say to ALWAYS ride like a kid!
Life is too short to be an adult.
Get out and explore. Strip off the mileage
meters and gizmos. Forget the day, forget
the work. Ride in the moment and be a kid!
I'm grabbing my ipod with some Pink Floyd
and headed out for the trails right now!
No juke-box this time, thank god! ![]()
